The Salt Monkey is a ten-minute absurdist tragicomedy about modern Chinese people: a successful businesswoman in Beijing puts forward a family investment plan only to find it opposed by the whole family; as she tries to win them over, things seem to take an unusual turn – family taboos are mentioned, long-buried emotions are unearthed, and everybody just seems to act a tad mad… What begins as just another family dinner turns out to be a scene of violence and murder.
The Salt Monkey is written and produced by SHERRY SHIHUI CHEN, directed by MATTHEW GOULD(The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Arts Theatre; A Body to Die For, Edinburgh Fringe Festival) , with a terrific cast of four British Chinese actors. They are: LOBO CHAN (Romeo and Juliet and Miss Saigon in the West End; King Kong; Peaky Blinders), LLOYD LI (Manchester School of Acting, BBC’s Talent Boost Programme), EUGENIA LOW (Hotel Medea, LIFT 2010; Theatre of Protest: The Women’s Spring, Roundhouse Studio; Unresolved, Stratford Fringe Festival), and LUCY SHEEN (Riddley Walker, Manchester Royal Exchange; Julius Caesar, Bristol Old Vic; Drink the Mercury, nominated for a TMA award; Hungry Ghosts, nominated for an OFFIE).
